Luiz Kim, angry and unsettled since being kicked out of the Marines, decides to seek out the sister he has not seen in more than twenty-five years. He makes contact. But, after flying halfway around the world to Japan for an emotional reunion, he is stunned to learn that she has just been murdered in church, while at prayer. A killer is on the loose, and it is clear that he is targeting members of the small church community. But why? Luiz is determined to use his military background to hunt down the killer. And quickly it becomes apparent that the key is a mysterious card left at each murder scene – a card depicting the Maria Kannon, a statue of a Buddhist deity that was once revered by persecuted Japanese Christians. As the stakes go higher and higher in this adrenaline-fueled thriller - second in the Brother Half Angel series - Luiz is forced to confront his notions of what it means to be alive. And whether he is ready to die.

In this second instalment of the Military Orders series, Brother Half Angel is back with much more involvement than in Brother Half Angel where we were introduced to him and the issues facing the persecuted church. This is good as I was looking forward to seeing what Brother Half Angel is all about. In this instalment, Roth does not disappoint. He has developed the plot in more depth than the first and also some of the returning characters that were introduced in the previous instalment. Character development is improved in this novel and are more relational.I really enjoyed this story.
Roth has introduced another aspect of the persecuted church. Radical members of the Taoist religion feel threatened with the increasing popularity of the New Joy Gospel Church and decide to do something about it. This forms the main plot of the story but does spark off other issues such as Luiz being recruited into the Military Orders team and him confronting the past that led to him being discharged from the Marines and him questioning what it means to be alive and would he be willing to die for his beliefs. In seeking to find the murderer of his sister, Luiz proves himself worthy of being in a military team and overcomes his shame and fear from his previous discharge.
Roth introduces an informative history into the Taoist beliefs and religion and specifically that of the Maria Kannon deity and how the Christians of the past used this as a front to continue practising Christianity without compromising biblical doctrine or faith due to Christianity being forced underground from the oppressive nature of the ruling government. This background history provides depth and structure to the plot and supports the motivation behind the persecution of the Christian church.
Based on the history of the Maria Kannon the reader begins to wonder how this is connected to murders of the Christians from the New Joy Gospel Church. Roth does a good job of stringing the reader along and keeping the guessing game going until the connection is revealed at an important part of the plot. From here, the plot intensifies and so does the pace.
My only negative is that I felt the ending was a bit rushed and you felt cut off too quickly.
Roth has a good series here and I would recommend any reader who has started this series to keep going to the end.
I am enjoying this Military Orders series.

The Maria Kannon A Brother Half Angel Thriller Martin Roth 9781482729245 Books Reviews
Well-written, good pacing, interesting concept to have a military for a church. There was a good tie-in with hundreds of years earlier and with the current time. Characters are interesting, and story line is easy to follow, without being predictable.
I didn't read this. I just want this off my non-reviewed list. I went over my head getting books that I didn't really had the time to read. I may get it again who knows, but I doubt it. I gave it a middle rating so it won't alter good nor bad this book as I don't know if it deserves bad or good review. Sorry and thanks for understanding.
Luis goes to Japan to see his long lost sister and finds out she has been murdered. This leads him on a journey to find the killer and to learn about Japanese and Korean religious culture. Haven't read the first book in this series but found this tale interesting and intriguing. I love books that also teach about other cultures. Will have to check out other books in this series. Definitely recommend.
Thank you Mr Roth, you have opened my eyes to alot of things this spoiled American did not see before. Christians are becoming rare and far between. The horrors that those caught endure make my heart sick. I love The South Korean church there and respect their total dedication. Makes me want to move there and learn from them. I would love to see more of this series as I love all the main characters. The head of the S. Korean church, cracks me up.
This book was ok - no more, no less. My biggest gripe was that I was reading it, and looking at the location number (page), I came to about the 80% mark of the book, and it just ended. After that we're previews, and samples of two other books. I wasn't ready for the story to just end suddenly. There were many unanswered questions that needed to be answered in my mind, that I was looking forward to being cleared up for me, such as the source of the evil being unveiled or discovered by Beother Half Angel. I liked the first book in the series, and may possibly read another one, but overall was not too excited abut this one.
The Maria Kannon is set in northern Japan's mountains--a place of utter beauty, but shrouded in superstition. Luiz Kim, a Christian, forced to retire from the Marines, who had become his "family." He loses his identity, his direction and his father; his mother and sister long gone. Having had an unsettled childhood with many moves and living in two different cultures and speaking three languages he longs for a sense of belonging and purpose. He begins to look for his long lost sister, and finds her--in Japan! He introduces her to Christ and she too, becomes a believer but is killed the night before they meet.
Her pastor, Yu-Han Kang, makes connections, translates Japanese and his home becomes something of a staging area for the investigation into Luiz's sister's murder. Luiz is joined by Brother Half Angel, whom we have met before, who quickly recruits him as a soldier for the Korean church which sponsors a special order tasked with helping Christians in danger by whatever means. Together they expose the forces behind the killing, stop the killer before he kills a third person and Luiz is able to see a direction for his life in which he can begin to resolve his personal issues of faith, and belonging in his new "home" with the Mercendarians.
If you enjoyed Brother Half Angel or Military Orders, you will enjoy this book as well. It is one suspense filled, fast paced novel! The action literally does not stop. Oh, there are lulls but then it takes off again. My interest never waned and I learned things about Korea and Japan that I did not know. For example, about the Maria Kannon, a Buddhist statue. And to find out the importance of the Kannon and its place in the story...you must read the book!
I love how Christianity is just one of the pieces of the story. There is no preaching, just reporting of the facts! The people involved just happen to be Christian. I would heartily recommend the book to all lovers of Christian thriller/suspense novels.
